PhD in Materials Science & Engineering | Sustainable Materials | Former NSF-GRFP Fellow

With a PhD in Materials Science & Engineering specializing in Polymers from Michigan State University, coupled with a B.S. with High Honors in Materials Science and Engineering from Rutgers University, I bring a deep understanding of the fundamental principles and advanced concepts in this discipline. My work experience at Becton Dickinson (BD) as a Materials Scientist in the Materials Center of Excellence (COE) has honed my skills in materials data analysis, first principles generation, and project management. I am currently leading a sustainability initiative in our company assessing the feasibility of recycling medical devices, which brings an understanding of the risk profiles and mitigations. During my tenure as a Graduate Research Assistant at Michigan State University, I developed innovative approaches for thermal recycling of bioplastics and optimized processing conditions for reactive extrusion of biobased polymers. I was also a teaching assistant (TA) for a Polymers & Composites lab, where I educated students on the theory, execution, and application of various characterization techniques used to characterize polymers and composites. Furthermore, my publication record in reputable journals showcases my ability to communicate complex scientific concepts effectively. I am well-versed in a wide range of characterization techniques, design methodologies, and computational tools relevant to environmental science, enabling me to provide comprehensive and insightful guidance to students.

Environmental Science, Biology, and Chemistry Tutor

Since I was a child, I have been fascinated with Science, so I decided to study Biology. I obtained a BS in Biology from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. I enjoyed every class, even the most difficult ones because they helped me grow by overcoming obstacles. Later in my career, I wanted to work in research-related programs, but my life took a turn, and I decided to move to another country. I had the opportunity to live in other countries and study abroad. As a student abroad, I enhanced my skills, in interpersonal relationships and dialogue among people of different cultures and creeds. I learned to be open to the world and accept diversity and differences. Also, I experienced that I can learn from each person I might encounter and be proud of my identity. I have lived in the United States, Italy, Switzerland, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico. In every country, I noticed the importance of the environment and the different efforts the community and the government will make to preserve it. However, I realized that the main issue to solve was education. I decided to apply for a position as a science teacher. At that point, I did not have the experience or skills to be a teacher, but I wanted to try it. I noticed that there was not an Environmental Science curriculum in the country's educational system. So, the first thing I taught was that I needed to update myself on science-related topics, especially Environmental Science. I enrolled in a program at UCLA, and I enjoyed it. I was able to understand the significance of climate change and the contribution that each human being can make to reverse the effects on the planet. I hope that I will contribute to the student's education by helping them take action on the environment and prepare them to become citizens of the world.
